to Seed + Stone Farm

a boutique fruit & floral farm

We are a small scale, woman-owned and operated fruit and cut flower farm located near Villanueva, NM, primarily serving the Santa Fe area. We offer weekly bouquet subscriptions, limited event floral, dried floral wreaths, and intermittent farmers market flowers. As our orchard matures we will also offer fresh fruit and craft cocktail syrups. We will have a market stand at the farm on Thursday afternoons from 3-7. Market bouquets will be available or you can call ahead for Jen to make you an arrangement. Start date to be announced but likely in May.

All that warm March weather has apples and crabapples blooming already! Sheesh. We spent part of our morning last Thursday with our new neighbor Steve helping with some pear and peach grafting.

This week was biodynamic tree paste time! We mix fresh cow manure with clay, sand, and diatomaceous earth to coat the tree trunks in the orchard. We have been seeing some southwest injury on the pears, and borer damage on the stone fruit, and some mystery spots on a few Asian pears that hopefully aren’t anthracnose, and this should help with all of those while also providing a nutrient bump for the trees. Southwest injury happens in the winter when the afternoon sun is bright and low in the sky and heats up the trunks enough for sap to start moving, and when temps drop low at night, the sap freezes and cracks the bark. The commercial solution is to paint the trunks with white latex, which isn’t biodegradable, doesn’t let the tree breathe, and doesn’t add any nutrient benefits. Here’s to natural alternatives! Of course by the end of the day I was spattered with all sorts of muddy manure!

We’ve been cleaning up garden beds, getting compost on the fruit trees, stratifying perennial seeds, shucking and nixtamalizing corn for tortillas, saying hello to the intrepid wasps, and finding beauty in dry marigold calyces. We will ring in the new year by starting pruning- with 100 trees getting bigger that’s a monthlong project. This marks the start of our 8th year of Seed and Stone Farm! Goodness, who knew that would go by so fast! Also we rediscovered a small late sweet corn planting that was tucked behind something much taller and yielded the tiniest ears of corn ever! They are delicious. Note to self- plant corn where it won’t get shaded out!

Some fresh, some tolerant of being out of water, some dried to eliminate a diy mechanics issue.

Another round of apple tasting! In 2019 we grafted our apples on M111 rootstock, which gives us larger trees with better anchorage and drought tolerance but also means our trees are less precocious, so these trees are just getting around to reproductive maturity!

Sometimes the harvest buckets look dreamy all on their own! Dahlias have been a little late to the party for us this year, glad they decided to make an appearance! Pulled the rest of the onions and shallots today and the first of the carrots. There’s seriously nothing like a fresh dug carrot!

Spent a little time today shelling beans after we finished filling a big wholesale order for @petalpusherssantafe - southern peas from @utopianseedproject , black turkey beans from @charlesdanielhavlik , black garbanzos and pink Santa Maria pinquito from the Dixon seed exchange, and the last few yellow Arikara beans grown from some very very old seeds. I sure do love the generosity of seed savers!

These cooler temperatures sure make farm work a lot nicer! Chinese asters are just coming on, and so dang pretty I wish we had planted waaaay more! Also the native bees love the foxglove and they are soooo cute!

A quick note on vase life: if there are still flowers in last week’s vase when I deliver the new bouquet for subscribers, I take them with me. This bouquet is made up of 8-day old flowers scavenged from one of those. Properly cared for (regular water changes and trimming stems, most importantly) our flowers last a long time! Also put together a huge order for Pat @petalpusherssantafe who will have gorgeous bouquets for sale tomorrow evening at the Canyon Road Summer Art Walk. Last month she sold out so get there early!
